Paspaley’s Bunnamagoo Estate cabernet and chardonnay, grown near Bathurst in NSW, are perfect examples of such wines judging by the reaction of the Sydney restaurant scene.The city’s top eateries have enthusiastically embraced the wines; they are on an extraordinary number of wine lists given their very limited production. From Ariato Café Zigolini's, restaurants with a wide range of cuisines and price points have listed Bunnamagoo. At the top end of the market, Bunnamagoo is at The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide’s Restaurant of the Year, Rockpool. The label is matched with French cuisine at restaurants like Guillaume at Bennelong, Bécasse, Forty One, Bilson’s and Tabou and is listed in top Italian restaurants Lucio’s, Buon Ricordo and Otto. The wines go with a range of modern Asian flavours at XO, Billy Kwong, Red Lantern, Longrain and jimmy liks. They harmonise with seafood at The Boathouse and seriously good Mod Oz at Sean’s Panaroma. They even partner native Australian cuisine at Edna’s Table.

Bunnamagoo’s Sales Manager Jean Luc Clavel believes that there are a number of reasons for the wines’ popularity with restaurateurs: “Firstly, they’re excellent, high quality wines, virtually handmade by the winemaker Robert Black. Also, the fruit comes from anexceptional cool climate area, comparable to some of the best in France. And everyone associated with the wine, the Paspaleys, the winemaker, even the sales people share the same passion and sense of integrity, I think that’s very important.” Clavel says the wines have eminently food friendly fruit and bouquet. “They’re elegant and understated and really underline the flavours of food.”
